ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Established in 2004, the Department of Chemical Engineering at SSN College of Engineering offers an extensive range of programs and research opportunities, including a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering (since 2004–2005) and an M.Tech in Environmental Science and Technology (since 2014–2015). Recognized as a Centre for Research by Anna University, the department also offers Ph.D. and M.S. (by Research) programs in collaboration with Anna University.

About Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is a multifaceted branch of engineering focused on the large-scale production and processing of chemicals. It bridges the gap between science and manufacturing, combining principles of chemistry and engineering. Chemical Engineers play key roles in designing equipment, developing production processes, ensuring safety, and optimizing operations across various industries, including petrochemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, energy, and environmental management.

The curriculum includes core subjects such as Chemical Technology, Process Calculations, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Operations, Heat and Mass Transfer, Reaction Engineering, Process Control, Economics, and Equipment Design. These courses equip students with a foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing them to tackle real-world challenges in chemical engineering.

Faculty and Research Excellence

The department has a team of highly qualified faculty members, with over 95% holding Ph.D. degrees. Faculty expertise spans areas such as nanomaterials, waste-to-chemical processes, natural product extraction, photocatalysis, and ionic compounds. Supported by DST Govt. of India, Research Funding Worth Rs. 3.36 Crores and Industrial Consultancy Worth Rs. 83.6 Lakhs , the faculty regularly publish research in esteemed journals and present at conferences. The department houses advanced laboratories and modern analytical instruments, including UV-Vis Spectrophotometers, HPLC, GC, AAS, and Bioreactors. Specialized chemical engineering software, such as CHEMCAD, Ansys, AspenPlus, MATLAB & Simulink, COSMOThermX, and TURBOMOLE, is available for cutting-edge research.

The department comprises:

  • Two Professors
  • Eight Associate Professors
  • Six Assistant Professors

Student Development and Support

Students are encouraged to engage in hands-on learning through industrial visits, in-plant training, and personality development programs. Dedicated guidance is provided for competitive exams like GATE and GRE. In their third and final years, students receive personality development and placement training to equip them for their careers.

Conferences, Events, and Workshops

The Department actively organizes various academic events. Each February, it hosts International Conferences, and in August, the department holds the National Level Student Symposium "INVENTE", a major event in the academic calendar. Additional workshops and training sessions are organized on topics including:

  • Pollution Control
  • ChemCAD
  • CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • MATLAB
  • Nanotechnology
  • Energy and Sustainability
